DESMOND MONETTE

Head Designer at Isaiah Shayle

AA Fashion Design & Product Development '22

What does “a day in the life of” you look like on the job?

I arrive early morning to the studio and go over plans for the day whether it’s pattern for a piece for a customer for the day, correct a fit issue on a piece, and/or coming up with a new idea to be made. Once we go over plans, we start to execute plans. Towards the end of the day, we discuss upcoming projects to determine if it will propel us or not benefit us.

What do you enjoy most about your job or field?

The creative freedom I have. Being able to have full control of what pieces is developed is every designer's dream.

How did education at Wade College help prepare you for what you are doing today?

It gave me a set of design and technical skills needed to develop clothing at and above industry standards. I have learned the skill set of being able to take an idea from paper, to pattern, and to a full garment. I’m grateful for the professors who taught me the skills needed.

What advice do you have for students interested in your field?

Go out, network, and make friends, not just in your field but also from other art forms. You never know who you’ll meet and where it may lead you. Most importantly, take advantage of internships. This is an industry of who you know.

What has your career path been like so far? How did you end up where you are?

It’s been challenging at times, but I enjoy every moment. Everything that happens is a part of your story. It’s all necessary. Networking and developing relationships through my internships got me to where I am today.

What opportunities, decisions, or events shaped your professional life?

Opportunities such as working with Venny Etienne (Designer) of LEVENITY, Melissa Taylor (Designer), and doing a photoshoot with Human Dior (high-end archive store) put me in places to meet others throughout Dallas that I could work with one day.

What are some of your proudest accomplishments?

Graduating from Wade College, participating in the school's fashion show, and helping design for famous clients in internships are some of my proudest accomplishments.

Anything else you’d like to share?

This is a business of up and downs. Develop your skills constantly. Never stop being a student of your craft. It will take you place you can’t imagine. Doors may open. They will also close. But when you get your shot, take full advantage, and don’t hold back. You’ll never know how you will impact history.
