What does “a day in the life of” you look like on the job?

My day begins early as I juggle various roles and responsibilities. As a mother, I prioritize my son's needs, ensuring he starts the day well. Then, I dive into a whirlwind of marketing and promotion. Depending on my energy and goals, I focus on showcasing and selling art by my artists on social media or promoting events and initiatives.

Being back at Wade, I balance schoolwork while taking care of my son. Networking is crucial, so I scour Facebook groups and local event sites for networking events to attend. I actively seek collaboration opportunities with fellow artists, searching through different media outlets for potential partnerships.

Perfecting my pitch deck for my latest exhibition, the HERstory Immersive Exhibition, takes a significant chunk of my time. I meticulously refine my presentation to capture the essence and impact of the exhibition. Meanwhile, I express gratitude for the people who have supported my journey and utilize social media to engage with my followers.

In the midst of it all, I ensure I stay on top of my studies, striving for academic excellence. As the day winds down, I reflect on my achievements, plan for the next day, and prioritize self-care.

What do you enjoy most about your job or field?

I find immense joy in discovering opportunities and exposure for minority artists. There's nothing quite like the excitement of sending an email to an artist, informing them that one of their pieces has been sold or inviting them to Dallas for a paid opportunity. It fills me with pride to assist artists in turning their dreams into a tangible reality, bridging the gap between passion and a sustainable career.

Equally fulfilling is the opportunity to educate both artists and those familiar with my work. I take pleasure in sharing my knowledge about Black Wall Street, my family history, and the insights I've gained. Empowering others through education is a vital aspect of what I do, enabling individuals to gain a deeper understanding of their heritage and the possibilities that lie within. In supporting and uplifting artists while spreading awareness and knowledge, I feel a deep sense of purpose. It's through these endeavors that I contribute to the growth and success of the artistic community and the preservation of cultural heritage.

How did education at Wade College help prepare you for what you are doing today?

My education at Wade College was undeniably one of the greatest achievements in my life. Working at the Market opened my eyes to a whole new level of professionalism that continues to shape my approach to this day. At Wade, I had the opportunity to learn graphic design which has empowered me to create my own flyers for various events and develop my own website. These skills have been invaluable in my journey as an artist and entrepreneur.

Among the many influential figures at Wade, Mr. Conte stands out as one of my biggest inspirations. His impact on my life is profound, even though he may not realize it. The comments he made about my work and who I am as a person helped me build the courage necessary to not only become a business owner but also an entrepreneur. Every teacher at Wade played a significant role in inspiring me and providing the encouragement I needed. What's remarkable is that every single class I took while pursuing my associate's degree has proven to be relevant and applicable in my professional career. Wade equipped me with a well-rounded education that I have been able to leverage effectively. My love for Wade runs so deep that it has always been a dream of mine to return, especially since they began offering bachelor's degree programs. The institution holds a special place in my heart, and I am grateful for the knowledge, inspiration, and support it provided me on my journey.

What do you enjoy most about your Wade College experience?

The most memorable aspect of my time at Wade College was the incredible exposure I received. I eagerly signed up for volunteer opportunities, including working with Jan Strimple and the Four-Legged Fashion event. Additionally, being part of Market and interacting with professionals allowed me to make phenomenal connections. The professors at Wade had remarkable industry experience, and their guidance and mentorship were invaluable. Not only did I gain knowledge, but I also formed deep friendships with fellow students. Graduating from Wade College felt like leaving a family behind because that's genuinely how it felt. Despite being a small college, the impact it had on me was immense, shaping my path and helping me forge a successful future.

What advice do you have for students interested in your field?

My advice would be to emphasize the importance of networking. Building connections and relationships can open doors and create opportunities. Be willing to put yourself out there, even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Embrace vulnerability and ask questions. Learning from others and seeking guidance will only enhance your growth. Creativity is key in our field. Love what you do and have a genuine passion for the people you're helping through your art. Being available and accessible to your audience and clients is crucial for success. Always be willing to learn and remain open to constructive criticism. It may not always be easy working with artists, but the rewards can be immensely fulfilling. Validating their talent and showing them that they don't need to overthink things too much can be empowering. Help them realize their unique value and remind them that there is a market out there for their work.

What has your career path been like so far? How did you end up where you are?

I started my journey in the world of luxury jewelry, which exposed me to a different demographic of people. It taught me how to effectively communicate with individuals who value investing in exquisite pieces. As time went on, I transitioned to working at a gallery, but unfortunately, that gallery eventually closed its doors.

However, fate had other plans for me. Some individuals who appreciated and admired my work approached me and offered to become angel investors for my own gallery. Initially, opening my own gallery wasn't something I had planned, but witnessing their unwavering confidence in me became the catalyst for my own self-belief. Their support provided me with the necessary courage, and I took the leap to establish my own gallery. Throughout this journey, something remarkable occurred. While I am an artist myself, I discovered a deep sense of fulfillment in advocating for other artists. It became clear to me that supporting and championing the work of fellow creatives was a calling I couldn't ignore. Consequently, I continued to dedicate myself to this meaningful work, nurturing and uplifting other artists alongside my own artistic pursuits. This unexpected turn of events allowed me to embrace new roles and responsibilities, opening doors to a more holistic and fulfilling artistic path. I am grateful for the confidence instilled in me by those who believed in my vision, and I remain committed to advocating for artists and fostering creativity within the community.

What opportunities, decisions, or events shaped your professional life?

I firmly believe that it was my unwavering dedication and commitment to my position at the gallery that led to my being approached by investors to open my own gallery. I took my responsibilities seriously and consistently went above and beyond expectations. By demonstrating my passion and expertise, I earned their trust and admiration. Embracing the opportunity to venture into entrepreneurship, I seized the moment and devoted time to developing a comprehensive business plan and operating agreement. I recognized the importance of laying a solid foundation for my gallery's success. Diligently researching how to operate an art gallery, I immersed myself in learning the ins and outs of the industry. Drawing on my creativity, I sought innovative ways to set my gallery apart from the rest. I wanted to create a space that not only showcased exceptional artwork but also offered a unique and memorable experience for visitors. Combining my knowledge of the industry with my artistic sensibilities, I infused creativity into every aspect of the gallery, from curation to events and exhibitions. Taking the leap into entrepreneurship required perseverance, dedication, and a willingness to put in the necessary work. I embraced the challenge and used my passion for art and business acumen to shape a gallery that would stand out in the industry.

What are some of your proudest accomplishments?

I take immense pride in everything I have accomplished thus far. From hosting various successful events to generating substantial revenue for the artists I represent, I have seen the tangible impact of my efforts. Publishing books and being invited to speak at prestigious events and podcasts have further validated my dedication to my craft. Every moment in this journey has been incredibly fulfilling, and I cherish the opportunities that have come my way. Returning to Wade College to pursue my bachelor's degree is a decision I am particularly proud of. It signifies my commitment to continuous growth and learning. My ultimate goal is to attend law school, specializing in intellectual property law, and merge my passion for the arts with my legal expertise. Becoming an intellectual property attorney will allow me to provide essential legal support and guidance to artists and creators, safeguarding their rights and helping them navigate the complexities of the art world. It is a harmonious convergence of my artistic pursuits and legal aspirations, and I am excited to embark on this next phase of my journey. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been afforded, and I relish every moment spent pursuing my passions. The future holds endless possibilities, and I am committed to making a lasting impact in the art community while advocating for the rights and protection of artists.
