Wardrobe Stylist Nikko Smith

Meet Nicolis “Nikko” Smith. He is a Wade College alum and Wardrobe Stylist of Nikko, LLC. Nikko grew up in Dallas, TX and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a Merchandise Marketing concentration in 2017, as well as an Associate of Arts with a Fashion Design concentration in 2016. Check out his story below.

What do you enjoy most about your job or field?

I enjoy the freedom to be creative. I get to work with so many amazing clients that I couldn’t have imagined working with so early into my career. I enjoy changing people’s lives through fashion and visuals.

How did education at Wade College help prepare you for what you are doing today?

Wade has heavily impacted my career. I’ve always been an advocate for presentation and Wade College further encouraged that notion. The portfolios I created were the reason I got hired at Neiman Marcus. Considering my resume prior to, Neiman’s was a huge jump and it was all thanks to Wade teaching me how to format resumes, cover letters, etc. Those same portfolios got me a job with a well known Celebrity Stylist, which ultimately led me to where I am today.

What has your career path been like so far?

I’ve had ups and downs in my career thus far, but I believe that they are all necessary to shape me into an even better wardrobe stylist and business owner. I always planned to be an entrepreneur, but honestly not this soon. Due to COVID, I lost the consistent income I was making, so I had to pivot. Thankfully, COVID didn’t stop anything. Some of my biggest projects happened right in the middle of the pandemic.

What advice do you have for students interested in your field?

Find a mentor. Find someone who is where you want to be and learn from them. This industry can be very tough, but be the expert. Never compare yourself to another person, because everyone’s journey is different. Study, hone your craft, and brand yourself!

What are some of your proudest accomplishments?

I wish I could pinpoint something, but I’m so proud of everything I’ve done. Fashion wasn’t my first career choice, so to see where I am now I’m a bit in disbelief, but I’m so grateful. One moment I will say happened yesterday. I’m nominated for “Stylist of the Year” with COSIGN Magazine! As I said, fashion wasn’t my first choice, so being nominated for an award is beyond me. You can vote for me for “Stylist of the Year” with COSIGN Magazine here. Fellow alum Venny Etienne is also nominated for “Designer of the Year.”
