Meet Jennifer Z., '25 BA Interior Design!
Jennifer shares her experience about getting to work during multiple markets at major wholesale marketplaces in Dallas, Las Vegas, and Atlanta across home decor, gift, apparel, accessories, and related lifestyle categories - one of the many industry opportunities available to our Wade College students and alumni. Learn more about her experience and growth below.
What market employers did you work for?
The Portico Collection, Umgee, Cathy & Co., and Transpac. Each had different clientele and responsibilities, which helped me grow in unique ways. I was invited back multiple times to work Market, which allowed me to continue building experience and strengthen client relationships.
What did you get to do?
I supported clients by curating product selections and building strong relationships while gaining experience in visual merchandising, color forecasting, and visual storytelling. I also had the opportunity to travel to other major cities, which helped me gain confidence in solo travel and take on responsibilities that required discipline and accountability, while setting myself up for success each day. This experience truly changed me and gave me greater appreciation for the opportunities I was given.
How has it helped shape your education, skills, experience, and/or career goals?
Working in a market with multiple brands exposed me to different clients, aesthetics, and responsibilities. It allowed me to connect with people across the country and strengthen my skills in client engagement, visual merchandising, and showroom/trade show work. This experience shaped my career goals in retail and interior design and made me realize what I am most passionate about and driven by, while also highlighting the value of adaptability and professionalism.
What advice would you give students seeking similar opportunities?
Take advantage of being near a big city like Dallas! Say yes to events, even just fun outings with friends, because you never know who you might meet and how it could expand your community. We are in control of our future, and growth happens when we challenge ourselves and put ourselves in new situations. Working market and other opportunities taught me how much you can grow when you stay open, social, and proactive.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Being surrounded by positive, motivated people who have their own goals and support yours makes such a difference. Having friends who encourage you to go to events, explore new places, and keep growing has helped me stay inspired. Traveling and listening to motivational podcasts have also helped me stay accountable and focused on the future I’m creating for myself.
